TODAY IN HISTORY

    SOLAR CELLS
    January 18, 1994 - U.S. Department of Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy announced production of solar panels giving nearly twice the efficiency of existing panels. Made by United Solar Systems of Troy, Mich., these amorphous silicon submodule (1 ft2) panels converted 10.2% of solar energy into electricity, as compared to 6% previously possible. This was possible by using new thin-film photovoltaic technology. The company has subsequently produced flexible solar shingles based on thin film photovoltaics that can permit the roofs of ordinary commercial and residential buildings to evolve from simply providing protection from the weather to becoming a source of much-needed electric power.

    FIRST U.S. X-RAY MACHINE EXHIBITION ???
    January 18, 1896 - New York City, U.S.A.

An x-ray machine was not exhibited at Casino Chambers, New York City, though some sources state it was. The news of Wilhelm Röntgen's discovery of the astonishingly penetrating X-rays had only been revealed to the world earlier in the month. So, riding on the wave of that publicity, the Cabaret du Neant opened, charging 25 cents admission to see the “Parisian sensation.” What the audiences actually saw was only a theatrical illusion of an x-ray image using only magic lantern techniques and the Peppers Ghost effect. No actual x-ray equipment was used. However, just a few days earlier, the first X-ray photograph in the U.S. has been credited were taken by Dr. Henry Lewis Smith in Davidson, N.C., on 12 Jan 1896. He had acted very quickly, as Röntgen made his discovery on 8 Nov 1895, announced it on 1 Jan 1896, and the first newspaper report, in Austria, was on 5 Jan 1896.

"...Change; we don't like it, we fear it, but we can't stop it from coming. We either adapt to change, or we get left behind. It hurts to grow, anybody who tells you it doesn't is lying. But here's the truth: Sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same. And sometimes, oh, sometimes change is good. Sometimes change is everything...."

Are you one of the numerous smokers looking to quit? Or do you have a close friend or family member struggling with this issue? If so, have you heard of E-Cigarettes?

Electronic Cigarettes or E-Cigarettes work on the concept of nicotine vaporization, instead of combustion. Research has suggested that e-cigarettes can be up to 60% more useful in smoking cessation as compared to nicotine replacement therapies like nicotine patches or gum. Often smokers face terrible withdrawal symptoms due to nicotine addiction and simply fail to quit even after multiple attempts. Vaping not only helps you cope with nicotine addiction, it also mimics the experience of smoking. Thus you experience the feeling of an analog cigarette, and can eventually quit smoking this way.

Very few people can just go ahead and quit cold turkey. You may become moody, anxious, irritated or fail to concentrate on even mundane daily tasks. Being around your social circle and continuously watching people smoke can be very challenging. Not to mention, the time you spent smoking everyday is left blank, like breaks and after meals. These are the times when smokers are highly tempted to go back to smoking. Here, vaping can be your blessing in disguise. So how do you go about it? It can be frightening to make the big switch, so here's an easy guide on how to cut back on, and quit, smoking through Vaping.

Why Vaping: The first thing to do is convince yourself that vaping is better than smoking. The process of vaping doesn't involve burning of tobacco; hence there is no tar, arsenic or other heavy metals involved. Studies have shown that e-cigarette vapor contain 9-450 times lower toxins than cigarette smoke. Since there is no ash or offensive smell, you can be assured of a less unpleasant experience and lesser social stigma. E-cigarettes give you the feel of an actual cigarette so you can easily get into vaping, slowly reduce the amount of smoking and completely replace it eventually.

How E-Cigarettes Work: There are two types of E-Cigarettes available; refillable and disposable. You can get them from convenience stores near you or you can also buy them online. The vaping unit will be made up of a device called atomizer which heats up the e-liquid. It is powered by a battery and it uses a coil for the heating process. You will need to fill in e-liquid as per your use and requirements. Once the e-liquid is heated, the device will release dense and flavorful vapor. Devices To Consider: When you set out to vape, you need to choose between the different types of devices available. Beginners can pick a starter kit, which is easy to use and does not require too much maintenance.

These kits usually include clearomizers/cartomizers/atomizers and batteries along with accessories. Their prices start at around $15 and will go up as per the features. Next you need to select E-Juices according to your taste and preferences. They are available in a variety of flavors ranging from traditional tobacco and menthol to banana bread and cotton candy. A small bottle of e-liquid (15ml) is available for around $9. Once you have got the hang of vaping, you can upgrade your kits and experiment with the different types of devices available. These include larger batteries, bigger tanks for the e-juice etc.

Start Vaping! : For starters, you can get E-Liquid that is nicotine based, say around 15 mg levels. Gradually decrease the levels of nicotine and eventually you can use E-Liquid that is non-nicotine based. This way, you can shake off your addiction to nicotine too, through vaping. When you begin with vaping, you may feel a little uncomfortable or odd with the entire experience. But in the long run, you can surely shake of the smoking habit and replace it with vaping.

It's high time you quit smoking. Make the right choice and be smoke free!
